Narbonne is a town in the Aude department
of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Once a prosperous port, it
is now located about 15 km from the shores of the Mediterranean
Sea, due to relentless silting of the river Aude. Narbonne is
linked to the nearby Canal du Midi and the Aude River by the
tree-shaded Canal de la Robine, which runs through the centre
of town. To the north of the canal is the restored medieaval
quarter with elegant shops and restaurants. The town is dominated
by the huge complex of the Palais des Archeveques and the abandoned
Cathedrale St Just et St Pasteur. |
