Loudun Poitou -Charentes
 |
 |
 |
|
Loudun is a small town in the Vienne
department and Poitou-Charentes region of western France. It
is located 30 km south of the town of Chinon and 25km to the
east of the town Thouars. The countryside of the Vienne is one
of the loveliest and most peaceful in France with rolling fields
of yellow sunflowers and green meadows set in a countryside dotted
with lakes and striped by rivers. Loudun is a town made famous
by the work first of Aldous Huxley, then by Ken Russell. Huxleys
novel, Devils of Loudon was based on events in Loudun
in 1634, when the priest of the town was tried for witchcraft,
convicted of having made a pact with the devil and was subsequently
burned at the stake. |

Places to visit in Poitou -Charentes |
|
 |
The Poitou -Charentes region in the
southwest of France includes the departments of Deux-Sevres,
Vienne, Charante-Maritime and Charante. The turbulent history
of the area left a legacy of rich architectural and cultural
heritage. The pilgrimage route in the Middle Ages to Santiago
de Compostela left impressive Romanesque churches such as those
at Poitiers and Parthenay. The Atlantic coastline and endless
sandy beaches are an attraction to this area, while inland the
lush countryside offers fine architecture, navigable waterways
and the finest wine and brandy. |
