Hirson is a town in the Aisne department
in Picardie in northern France. It lies 18 kms southwest of Vervins,
just a few miles south of the border with Belgium. In the past
it was an important strategic position due to its proximity to
the intersection of several railway lines. From 1911, there was
a permanent fort and two artillery batteries near the railway
junction. The town at that time was engaged in the manufacture
of glass bottles, tiles and iron and tin goods, as well as wool-spinning
and brewing. |
