Fougeres Brittany

Fougères is a town in the Ille-et-Vilaine
department in Bretagne in northwestern France. With over a thousand
years of history, the town boasts the largest medieval castle
in Europe, a medieval stronghold built on a granite ledge. A
large section of the town walls survive stretching from the château
in the lower town, up the hill to surround the upper town. The
citizens in the lower town who were outside the fortifications,
had to retreat into the fortress in times of trouble. Fougères
also has one of only three belfries in Brittany, where a weekend
market now takes place. The Forêt de Fougères, just
to the north of the town, offers walking, cycling and a very
pleasant lake with swimming beach and play area. |

Places to visit in Brittany |

Brittany sits in north-west France,
occupying a large peninsula separating the English Channel and
the Bay of Biscay. The town and port of Roscoff is served by
ferry links with England and Ireland. A long jagged coastline
is the region's great attraction, with magnificent beaches and
seaside resorts on the northern shores of Cote d'Emeraude and
Cote de Granit Rose. The south coast is gentler with wooded river
valleys, a milder climate and the prehistoric sites of Carnac
and the Golfe du Morbihan. The regional capital is Rennes and
the great castle at Fougeres is unmissable. |
