Foix is a town in the Ariège
department of the Midi-Pyrénées région,
located in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The town is dominated
by its medieval castle which stands on a high rock, 380 metres
above sea level, at the fork where the Arget River joins the
Ariège. The castle turrets and battlements form a dramatic
skyline and afford splendid views over the town. Below the castle
is an 11th-century church and narrow cobbled streets lined with
medieval, half-timbered houses. Places to visit include the village
of Montgaillard, an open-air museum that recounts bygone days
with old ironworks and a sawmill and the Musee departemental
de l'Ariege, an archaeological museum with military exhibits
housed in the castle. |
