Coutances is located in the Manche
department in Normandy, in northwestern France. It lies on the
west side of the Cotentin Peninsula. Coutances Cathedral is a
Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral, the seat of the Bishop of Coutances
and Avranches. It stands 80 metres tall and dominates the town,
and can be seen from as far away as Jersey. It is a classic example
of the Gothic style of Normandy in its use of long straight vertical
lines and contains a chapel and stained glass dedicated to Saint
Marcouf. Coutances also has a well-known botanical garden and
an art museum. |
