Brest Brittany

Brest is a large city in the Finistère
department of Brittany in northwestern France. It lies in a sheltered
position near the western tip of the Breton peninsula, amidst
a dramatic landscape near the entrance to the natural Rade de
Brest. Brest is an important seaport and naval base, and is situated
to the north of a magnificent landlocked bay. It occupies the
slopes of two hills divided by the river Penfeld with part of
the town on the left bank regarded as Brest proper, while the
part on the right is known as Recouvrance. Brest is best-known
for its Pont de Recouvrance, a massive drawbridge 64 m high,
the military arsenal and the rue de Siam. The Castle and the
Tour Tanguy are the oldest monuments of Brest. |

Brittany sits in north-west France,
occupying a large peninsula separating the English Channel and
the Bay of Biscay. The town and port of Roscoff is served by
ferry links with England and Ireland. A long jagged coastline
is the region's great attraction, with magnificent beaches and
seaside resorts on the northern shores of Cote d'Emeraude and
Cote de Granit Rose. The south coast is gentler with wooded river
valleys, a milder climate and the prehistoric sites of Carnac
and the Golfe du Morbihan. The regional capital is Rennes and
the great castle at Fougeres is unmissable. |
