Blaye Aquitaine
 |
 |
 |
|
Blaye is a town in the Gironde department
of Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is located on the right
bank of the Gironde estuary which is about 3 km wide at this
point. The town is close to the A10 autoroute, 56 km north of
Bordeaux. The striking feature of the town is the citadel built
by Vauban on a rock beside the river, with an old Gothic château
within the walls. Blaye is also defended by the Fort Paté
on an island in the river and the Fort Médoc on its left
bank, both from the 17th century. The citadel of Blaye, its city
walls, the Fort Paté and the Fort Médoc were all
listed in 2008 as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. |

Aquitaine lies in the south-western
part of France, along the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees mountain
range on the border with Spain. It comprises Dordogne, Gironde,
Lot-et-Garonne, Landes and Pyrenees-Atlantiques. It is bounded
to the south by Spain, to the east by Midi-Pyrénées,
to the north by Poitou-Charentes and Limousin and to the west
by the Atlantic Ocean. The major cities include Bordeaux, Pau,
Bayonne, Mont-de-Marsan, Biarritz, Bergerac, and Périgueux.
The endless Atlantic coastline here is the Côte d'Argent,
one of the most famous coasts in France. Fine medieval architecture
can be seen along the pilgrim's route to Santiago de Compostela,
while splendid chateaux characterize the wine districts around
Bordeaux. The Landes Forest, the largest pine forest in Western
