Ax-les-Thermes is a town in the Ariege
department of Midi - Pyrenees in southwestern France. It lies
at the confluence of the Ariège River with three tributaries,
20 kilometres southeast of Tarascon. The spa town is completely
surrounded by mountains and is an excellent base for exploring
the surrounding peaks or as a stopover on the way to Andorra,
down the N20 to Font-Romeu and on to Perpignan and the Mediterranean.
Its proximity to Andorra enables cross-border shopping. Ax is
well known for its warm sulphur springs of which there are about
60. The waters were used by the Romans to treat rheumatism and
skin diseases. The springs were developed in the medieval period
to treat soldiers returning from the Crusades afflicted with
leprosy, and from the 19th century onwards, a spa tourism industry
grew up. |
