Argentan Normandy
 |
 |
 |
|
Argentan is located in the Orne department
in northwestern France, in Lower Normandy. Argentan is an old
Roman town built along the Orne River, that continued to grow
during the Middle Ages. It was the site of the Battle of Argentan
in 1944 during the Second World War. This battle was a level
in the popular WWII video game Call of Duty 3. Lace has been
made in Argentan from the 17th century, when Louis XIVs
minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert founded the lace industry. Characteristic
of this lace is a net background consisting of a large hexagonal
mesh, the six sides of which are worked over with buttonhole
stitching. Flower patterns are similar to those of Alençon,
25 miles away, but are more solid-looking than their Alençon
counterparts. Argentan lace making declined after the Revolution
but was revived briefly in the 1870s. The town is 180 km northeast
of Rennes, 133 km southwest of Rouen and 100 km north of Le Mans.
