Ales Languedoc - Roussillon
 |
 |
 |
|
Alès is a town in the Gard
department of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Alès lies
46 km north northwest of Nîmes, on the left bank of the
Gardon River, which half surrounds it. It is located at the foot
of the Cévennes, near the Cévennes National Park,
amongst beautiful scenery. Once noted for cloth and silk, Ales
industries now focus on making machinery, electrical equipment,
hosiery, and base metal and silver are mined near the town. In
the 16th century Ales was one of the principal centres of French
Protestantism. The Peace of Ales, signed in Ales in 1629, stripped
the Huguenots of their political powers. Several buildings dating
from this period remain. |

Places to visit in Languedoc
- Roussillon |
|
 |
The provinces of Languedoc and Roussillon
stretch from the foothills of the Pyrenees on the Spanish border
to the mouth of the river Rhone. The region comprises Lozere,
Gard, Herault, Aude and the Pyrenees-Orientales. The area combines
miles of gentle coastline with a rugged inland, offering mountain
walks in the Haute Languedoc and high plateau of the Certagne
and acres of vineyards in the Corbieres and Minervois. The enduring
legacy of the Romans is evident in the great amphitheatre at
Nimes, while the abbeys of St Martin-du-Canigou, St Michel-de-Cuxa
and St Guilhem-le-Desert are superb examples of early Romanesque
architecture. |
