Albi Midi - Pyrenees
 |
 |
 |
|
Albi is a town and the capital of
the Tarn department of the Midi-Pyrenees region. It is located
on the Tarn River 76 kms northeast of Toulouse. The city centre
is still much as it was in the Middle Ages, a warren of narrow
cobbled streets and alleyways lined with gabled houses and half-timbered
shops. Albi was built around the original cathedral and episcopal
group of buildings, an historic area covering 63 hectares, with
red brick and tiles featuring on most of the buildings. Older
than the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the Palais de la Berbie,
formerly the Bishops' Palace of Albi, is now the Toulouse-Lautrec
Museum, one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in France.
The musuem contains more than 1000 works, including the 31 famous
posters, forming the largest public collection in the world devoted
to Toulouse-Lautrec. |
