Abbeville Picardy

Abbeville is a city in Picardy in
northern France. The town is located on the Somme River, about
20 kilometres from its mouth in the English Channel and 45 kilometres
northwest of Amiens. It lies about halfway between Paris and
Calais. In the medieval period, it was the lowest crossing point
on the Somme and it was nearby that Edward III's army crossed
shortly before the Battle of Crécy in 1346. The city was
very picturesque until the early days of the Second World War
when it was bombed mostly to rubble in one night. Several of
the town's attractions remain, including the Gothic St. Vulfran's
church, erected in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The facade
is a magnificent specimen of the flamboyant Gothic style with
beauiful door panels carved in the 16th century, flanked by two
towers. Also worth seeing is the very ornate Flemish-style station,
the gare SNCF. |

appeal of this region, with the Cathedral Notre-Dame in its capital
Amiens, a pinnacle of the Gothic style. More splendid examples
can be seen at Beauvais, Noyon, Senlis and in the hilltop town
of Laon. The chateaux at Chantilly and Compiegne are both spectacular
visitor attractions. |
